Bio
Sandra Guzmán is an Assistant Professor and extension specialist in the Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) Department, located at University of Florida (UF) – Indian River Research and Education Center (IRREC), in Fort Pierce, Florida. She leads the Smart Irrigation and Hydrology (SIAH) lab at IRREC focusing on the development of research and extension programs that includes the use of in-field sensor data for irrigation and nutrient management, development of decision support systems for agricultural water management, and evaluation of Best Management Practices (BMPs) in agricultural fields. Her lab is located in one of the aquatic ecosystem TBL sites that represents complex water interactions between land use and water resources sustainability. As part of STEPS she will test solutions that contribute in the management of Phosphorous in water systems connecting to freshwater sources.
Dr Guzman holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Agricultural Engineering from Universidad Nacional de Colombia, and a Ph.D. in Biological Engineering- water resources concentration from Mississippi State University. She worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Mississippi State- Social Science Research Center (SSRC) on an EPA funded project using social indicators combined with environmental indicators to accelerate water quality programs across the Mississippi River Basin. Then she joined the Auburn University Water Resources Center- Biosystems engineering department as a postdoctoral fellow Guzmán working in the simulation of water and nutrient transport from agricultural practices at the field and watershed scale for the upper Floridian aquifer. She joined the UF ABE department in November 2018.
