Luke Gatiboni

Bio

Luke Gatiboni is an Assistant Professor of Soil Fertility and Extension Soil Fertility Specialist in Crop and Soil Sciences Department at North Carolina State University. He has a B.S. in Agronomy from Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil, an M.S. in Soil Science and Ph.D. in Soil Science from the same University. Dr. Gatiboni worked for Santa Catarina State University (Brazil) during 15 years and his responsibilities included to teach soil fertility courses and to develop a research and extension program related to nutrient management and fertilization of tropical soils. In Southern Brazil, Dr. Gatiboni led the research and extension effort to refine the fertilizer recommendations for Southern Brazilian Soils. During his career, he has been working with soil acidity neutralization, nutrient management, and dynamics of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the soil-plant continuum.

Dr. Gatiboni joined North Carolina State University in 2019 and his applied research and extension program has the main objective of refining the fertilizer recommendations for North Carolina crops. His current efforts include evaluation of soil health and soil fertility status of North Carolina agricultural fields, impacts of saltwater intrusion and remediation of NC salinized coastal soils, and recalibration of phosphorus and potassium recommendations for agricultural crops. A major focus of Dr. Gatiboni’s current research is to recalibrate phosphorus recommendations for farmers in North Carolina through a partnership with NCDA&CS. Dr. Gatiboni is co-chair of a working group, “Interagency Soil Test Phosphorus Committee”, created to undertake soil test phosphorus recommendations revisions for North Carolina soils. Dr. Gatiboni leads the Soil Fertility Lab at Crop and Soil Science Department.
