Lucas Crane is an Environmental Engineering PhD candidate at Arizona State University, where he conducts research on solving Environmental Engineering problems, including potable reuse scenarios, collection and treatment of urine for sustainable applications, and water-food-energy interdependencies. Lucas’s research in STEPS has focused on improving the implementation and adoption of urine diversion systems for phosphorus recovery, including urine collection system optimization, recovery of urine-derived nutrient and water products, and community-scale modeling of urine diversion. Lucas is involved in food waste and alternative protein projects, where he conducts research on life cycle impacts. In these projects, Lucas has utilized interdisciplinary and convergent approaches and has collaborated with STEPS social scientists, government scientists, facilities departments, manufacturers, and other relevant stakeholders. Aside from his research, Lucas served as President of the Scholar Leadership Committee in STEPS from 2023-2025, where he led multiple initiatives on career development and skills building for scholars.
