Bio

Kelly Chernin is an Assistant Professor in the Communication Department at Appalachian State University. Her research interests focus on Public Interest Communications (PIC) and how communicators can tell better stories to get stakeholders to care about important causes. She is also the current editor of the Journal of Public Interest Communications. Chernin’s previous research explored social movements and how memory influences future democratic change in the wake of mass communications in China and Hong Kong. She is currently interested in how communicators can help scientists present their findings to the general public more effectively.

Chernin earned a B.A. in Communications from American University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Mass Communications from Pennsylvania State University. Following her graduate degrees, she was also a Research Associate at the Center for Public Interest Communications at the University of Florida.
