Bio
Emma Edwards is a recent graduate of Appalachian State University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and a GIS certificate. She is a 2024 recipient of the Susan E. Keefe Award for Practicing Anthropology and a 2023 recipient of the Dr. Jill Loucks Memorial Award for Outstanding Senior in Anthropology. These awards honor students who display a quality engagement with anthropology, and a clear commitment to continuing anthropological research after graduation.
Emma’s research focuses on collaboration with the Lumbee Tribe, of which she is an enrolled member. She strives to use archaeology to answer questions related to the history and culture of the tribe. Currently, Emma is working under STEPS theme 2 with Dr. Seth Grooms, Dr. Sophia Dent, Dr. Krista Lewis, and Dr. Matthew Ogwu as part of a project entitled Braiding Knowledge: A collaborative approach to translating soil memory of Indigenous land management for soil conservation and food sovereignty.
