Bio
Chartanay Bonner is the Associate Director for Enrollment Management, Student Success, and Broadening Participation at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN). In her role, Bonner supports graduate students to promote student success and organizes enrollment and recruitment to encourage diversity and inclusion to STEM students.
Bonner received her B.S. degree in Chemistry from Tuskegee University in 2012 and her Ph.D. degree in Chemistry at Western Michigan University (WMU) in 2018. She researched the design, synthesis, and environmental impact of nanomaterials. More specifically, she focused on understanding how emerging contaminants such as silver nanoparticles and heavy metals impact bioremediation processes and sustainability. Bonner also carried out postdoctoral research in higher education with the WMU graduate college through a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) grant.
In addition to her career and academic pursuits, Bonner serves as the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemist and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) STEM Festival Chair. In this role, she leads a national team that promotes scientific discovery and research interest within the K-12 age group. In her service, Bonner highlights the need for diversity and inclusion within science.
Bonner is dedicated to advancing the scientific field by advocating for STEM academia, research, and service.
