Cary Strickland
Bio
Cary Strickland is a senior member of the Innovation Advisors team at RTI International. He specializes in innovation management practices, including technology scouting, landscaping and evaluation, market opportunity analysis, and technology-inspired ideation. His work ensures corporate, foundation, and government clients, understand new areas of technology. As a part of the STEPS team, he will lead development of technology roadmaps that illustrate how the STEPS 25-in-25 vision may be achieved and highlight opportunities for all stakeholders to participate. Leveraging his technical expertise, business acumen, and creativity, Mr. Strickland will ensure the roadmapping activities include a rigorous analysis of the new technologies and markets that relate to phosphorous reduction. He also brings human-centered design and facilitation (both in-person and virtual) skills to the team that will be deployed to support knowledge transfer activities related to the roadmap.
Strickland earned dual B.S degrees in Chemical Engineering and Paper Science Engineering from North Carolina State University and holds a Master of Engineering Management degree from Duke University. With his academic background in engineering, he leads projects focused on sustainability and packaging in his other work at RTI. Prior to joining RTI in 2011 he was a researcher at the MeadWestvaco Center for Packaging Innovation. He conducted R&D on new papermaking processes, supported mill trials at the company’s pulp and paper production facilities, and understands the challenges industrial plants face in controlling phosphorous load in their effluent.
Strickland has been an active fisherman and general outdoorsman in the rivers and lakes of North Carolina for nearly 30 years. Conservation of our natural environment, and especially our waterways and marine ecosystems, is one of the things that excites him most about the STEPS vision.
