Bio
Dr. Cheryl Xu is currently a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at NC State University. She received her Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University. Dr. Xu is an expert with 20+ years of experience in multifunctional ceramic materials, high-temperature wireless sensing, and artificial intelligence (AI) for process modeling and real-time control. She has attracted a high level of research funding (~$12M) through research awards and contracts. Her research work has been supported by both government agencies and large defense companies that include and are not limited to the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Army Research Office (ARO), Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Energy (DOE), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and General Dynamics, etc. She has graduated 9 Ph.D. and 7 M.S. students. Most of her former students work in major manufacturing industries, such as Google, Apple, SpaceX, GE, Lockheed Martin, Siemens, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, etc. She has co-authored one textbook and has written seven book chapters. She has published ~80 peer-reviewed journal articles and ~50 refereed conference proceedings. She has 15 US and international patents and patent applications. Dr. Xu serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Nature portfolio at npj Advanced Manufacturing. Dr. Xu is an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Fellow. Dr. Xu has served on the Fellows Committee of the IEEE Education Society since 2014. She chaired NSF’s 1st National Wireless Research Collaboration Workshop in 2015. She also won the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Young Investigator Award and was awarded the Society of Manufacturing Engineering (SME) Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award.
